Submissions

Would you like to publish an article on Firebrand?

  • Please take a look at our core values and discern whether your proposed article makes sense here.

  • If you feel your article would be a good fit for Firebrand, send an abstract of 250-300 words describing your article to editors@firebrandmag.com. In addition to the abstract, please tell us a bit about who you are and your qualifications (less than 100 words).

  • If your abstract is approved, we will request an article of 1,000-2,000 words for review. In rare cases we will review longer articles.

  • We will try to respond to all queries within three weeks.

  • We reserve the right to reject any article query or submitted article.

  • We do not accept previously published material.

  • Please note: We reserve the right to (a) edit all essays for publication and (b) refuse the publication of any essay submitted.

Style Guide

  • All work should be original. Please do not submit previously published work unless specifically requested.

  • Essays are expected to be between 1000-2000 words. Essays that substantially depart from these limits will be excluded from publication unless other arrangements have been made in advance with a member of the editorial board.

  • Submit work double-spaced in 12-point Times New Roman font.

  • Do not add an extra space in between sentences.

  • Rather than indenting paragraphs, use a line break between paragraphs and keep indentation flush with the left margin.

  • Use of the first person is acceptable.

  • Try to avoid use of the passive voice.

  • Please use the Oxford comma as appropriate.

  • The pronoun “they” is plural and writers should only use it as such.

  • Authors should not use footnotes. If it is important to cite a source, please use parenthetical notation. Remember, though, that Firebrand is not a professional academic journal, and thus we do not require citation in the same manner as academic journals.

  • Quotation marks are for quotations, not to add emphasis.

  • Links should be used to point to a larger conversation that is briefly mentioned in an article. Links are not a substitute for in-text citations.

  • In-text citations are not necessary for general concepts (such as liberalism or progressivism, etc.). They are necessary if you are citing a quotation or a unique idea from another person.

  • We will not tolerate plagiarism either of text or ideas. Attribute as necessary.

  • Please include a by-line (no more than three sentences) with your submitted article. Your by-line should include your name exactly as you would like it listed in the article.
