Firebrand’s 2nd Annual Charles Wesley Poetry Contest!

“Hark! the herald angels sing…”

In this season of Thanksgiving, we are especially grateful for the hymns of Charles Wesley! And so, in honor of Charles Wesley’s birthday on December 18, Firebrand is holding its second annual poetry writing contest! Charles Wesley wrote nearly 9,000 hymns during his lifetime, each imbued with deep theological truths to call believers to praise God. For the next three weeks, the editors invite submission of poetry in the spirit of Charles Wesley. The rules for the contest are as follows:

  • Submissions must be received at editors@firebrandmag.com no later than December 13, 2022, to be considered.

  • Only one submission of no more than 250 words per author is allowed. Please include your name and mailing address with your emailed entry.

  • Original, previously unpublished works only.

  • Poetry will be judged on the following criteria:

    • A reflection of orthodox Wesleyan theology;

    • Alignment with the style of Charles Wesley’s poetry;

    • Aesthetic appeal;

    • Coherence of theme;

    • Appropriate literary devices (e.g., rhyme, meter, use of metaphors, etc.);

    • An ability to lead the reader to praise God.

  • The judges’ decisions are final.

  • Winning poems (Grand Prize Winner and runners up) will be published in Firebrand on December 20, 2022.

  • Grand Prize Winner will receive a free ticket to the Spirit & Truth Conference in Dayton, Ohio, on March 9-11, 2023. Travel and accommodations not included.
